Beginning Monday, July 13, Liberty Utilities will begin work in Central Square to start replacing gas lines.

Most of the work will take place in the parking spaces on the west side of Central Square. During work hours, those parking spaces will generally be closed. In most cases, crews will reopen the spaces at the end of each workday so visitors can use them when dining, shopping, or visiting downtown businesses in the evenings, unless posted otherwise.

At times, crews may shift traffic lanes to safely complete the work. If needed, the slip lane from Central Square to West Street may close for up to a few days at a time. When that happens, drivers will follow a signed detour using Gilbo Avenue.

Please allow a little extra travel time, follow posted signs, and use caution when traveling through the work area.

We appreciate your patience and support as the Downtown Project construction begins. Your cooperation helps keep workers, residents, and visitors safe while improvements move forward. For more information on the project, please visit KeeneNH.gov/downtown

Downtown Keene will have more trees when the Downtown Infrastructure Project is complete. Before designing the project, the City completed a tree study to evaluate every tree in the project area. While some trees must be removed because they are in poor condition or to make way for important new underground infrastructure, about 85 existing trees will remain, and more than 150 new trees will be planted throughout the project area. The project also includes 742 shrubs and more than 6,650 perennial plants.

The new trees will have Silva Cells – modular grids that hold uncompacted, nutrient-rich soil beneath the surface and allow roots to spread naturally without causing buckling at the surface level. This will also help the trees grow faster, reach a larger mature canopy size, and absorb more stormwater runoff. The result will be a greener downtown with more trees.
