Lithium-ion batteries are prohibited from disposal in Keene’s and all of New Hampshire’s landfills and incinerators. When crushed or damaged in any way, they can ignite and cause fires. These batteries are used in items such as:

Portable electronics such as cell phones, laptops, tablets, cameras, wireless headphones, speakers, toothbrushes, and other rechargeable electronic devices,
Automotive vehicles,
Electric bikes and scooters,
Lawncare equipment,
Cordless power tools, and
Toys.

Never put lithium-ion batteries in the trash or curbside recycling bin! The batteries must be recycled through battery collection programs – never mixed with regular recyclables. In Keene, some options include:

Bring used batteries to the Keene Transfer Station and place them in the designated area at the recycling facility,
Several local retailers offer battery recycling collection boxes, or
Visit Call2Recycle.org to find convenient drop-off locations near you.

The Monadnock Aging & Disability Resource Center (ServiceLink) at 105 Castle Street is opening its lobby for people to sit and cool down for a bit. Are there other businesses or locations in Keene that are opening their air-conditioned spaces to help people who otherwise don't have a place to get out of the heat? Please let us know in the comments, or DM us.

Thank you to all who are helping out during this difficult time for many people.

As this extreme heat wave continues, please drink plenty of fluids, seek air-conditioned spaces, wear light-weight clothing, and check on friends and neighbors. The Keene Public Library is open today and air-conditioned, and the City pools at Wheelock Park and Robin Hood Park are also open.
