If your sewer backs up, call the City Public Works Department right away.
Weekdays 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM: (603) 352-6550
Nights, weekends, and holidays: (603) 352-2222 (Keene Police Dispatch)
What to do:
- Tell us your sewer is backed up.
- Give us your name, address, and phone number.
- Ask for a “manhole check.” (This is a free service.)

Why call us first?
We need to check the City’s sewer line. If the problem is there, we’ll fix it. If you try to fix it yourself, it could cause an overflow in your home. If someone opens your sewer cleanout cover and the City sewer main is backed up, this may allow contents of the sewer system (which is under pressure) to discharge into your home or business. If the problem is in your own sewer line, we’ll let you know. In this case, you will be responsible for contacting a plumber or drain cleaning company to clear the blockage.
“Flushable” does not mean it is safe for your septic system or sewer. They can clog your system and be expensive to fix! “Disposable” items are not flushable and should go in the trash. Only human waste and toilet paper are flushable!
