National Park and Recreation Month Proclamation- July 17, 2025

At the City Council meeting on July 17th, 2025, Mayor Kahn presented a proclamation to Parks and Recreation Director, Carrah Fisk-Hennesey, to proclaim July as Park and Recreation Month in the City of Keene. Parks and recreation are essential to the quality of life in communities across the nation, including the City of Keene. Parks and recreation promote wellness and active lifestyles, improving the physical and mental health of residents of all ages and that together, we are building thriving communities centered on health and well-being. Access to parks and time in nature enhance cognitive performance and overall well-being so that together, we help people play, grow, and connect with each other and with nature. Recreation programs such as summer camps, after-school care, youth sports, and environmental education are vital to childhood development and lifelong learning so that together, we are creating high-quality programs and welcoming public spaces. Parks and recreation contribute to environmental resilience, serving as adaptable infrastructure that helps communities respond to climate change and natural disasters so that together, we are building sustainable parks and green spaces for current and future generations. Parks and recreation strengthen local economies by boosting property values, supporting tourism, and helping to attract and retain businesses. The U.S. House of Representatives has designated July as Park and Recreation Month. The City of Keene recognizes the broad benefits that parks, trails, open spaces, and recreation programs bring to individuals and the community as a whole. Let us honor this month by recognizing the vital role of parks and recreation in building vibrant, healthy, and connected communities. This year’s theme, “Build Together, Play Together” celebrates the dedication of our full-time, part-time, and seasonal parks and recreation professionals, as well as the many volunteers who help make Keene’s parks and programs possible.
