We reached an important milestone this past week with Liberty Utilities completing installation of the new gas main on the east and west sides of Central Square. The City’s contractor, Casella Construction, Inc., continued installation of the new water main on the west side of Central Square and preparations for water main installation on the east side.
Planned Work Activities:
- Tuesday, September 8: Casella Construction will begin installing new water main along the north end of Central Square, starting near Court Street and progressing east toward Washington Street throughout the week. Crews will also continue installing tree protection fencing and trunk protection for trees adjacent to active construction. Traffic shifts, road closures, detours, and parking closures will be in place to safely accommodate this work.
Parking Impacts:
- Tuesday, September 8: Parking on the west side of Central Square will be closed from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
- Wednesday, September 9 – Friday, September 11: Parking on the north side of Central Square will be closed from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Several public parking lots within a short walk of Central Square will remain open throughout construction. Please visit the City’s Parking Services webpage for additional information.
Planned Traffic Impacts/Detours:
- Tuesday, September 8: The west side of Central Square (southbound) will be closed to vehicle traffic. Southbound traffic on Court Street will be detoured via School Street to West Street. Local access to Winter Street will be maintained.
- Wednesday, September 9 – Friday, September 11: The north side of Central Square will be closed to vehicle traffic. Northbound traffic through Central Square will be detoured via Washington Street to Union Street, then to Court Street. Southbound traffic on Washington Street will be detoured via Union Street to Court Street.
Please note that planned construction activities and related traffic impacts may change as work progresses. Motorists and pedestrians are encouraged to stay alert, use caution, and be prepared for shifting traffic patterns throughout the project.
The next Coffee & Hardhats meeting will be held on Wednesday, September 9, at 9:00 a.m. at the Keene Transportation Center. Representatives from Casella Construction will be in attendance to discuss upcoming work in Central Square. The public is invited to attend and ask questions.
