10/30/26 Downtown Project Update: Water Main, Sewer & Traffic Impacts

Good afternoon,

Casella Construction, Inc. continued making progress on downtown utility upgrades this past week. Crews focused on installing sewer manholes and new sewer piping at the Roxbury Street intersection. The newly installed water main around Central Square was filled, and hydrostatic pressure testing was successfully completed to confirm the integrity of the new line. Additionally, exploratory excavations were performed along the southern end of the project to locate existing water, sewer, and drainage utilities and connections.

Planned Work Activities

Monday, November 2 – Friday, November 6

Casella’s work will continue to focus on underground utility improvements, including:

  • Sewer & Drainage: Crews will continue sewer and drainage utility upgrades at the Roxbury Street intersection.
  • Water Main Disinfection: The new water mains around Central Square will be treated with a high concentration of chlorine to disinfect the lines. The mains will then be flushed, and water samples will be collected and tested to confirm the absence of bacteria.
  • Exploratory Excavations: Excavations will continue at several locations along Main Street, primarily near the southern end of the project, to confirm the locations of existing water, sewer, and drainage utilities.

Parking Impacts

Monday, November 2 – Friday, November 6

  • Parking Closures: Several parking spaces on the east and west sides of Central Square will be closed from 7:00 AM until the end of each workday.
  • No Parking Zones: Any parking spaces blocked by orange cones or barriers are designated as No Parking zones.
  • Alternative Parking: Multiple public parking lots within a short walking distance remain open and available. For parking locations and additional information, please visit the City’s Parking Services webpage.

Traffic Impacts & Detours

Monday, November 2 – Friday, November 6

  • Roxbury Street Closure: The Roxbury Street/Central Square intersection will be closed. Traffic traveling on Roxbury Street toward Central Square will be detoured via Franklin Street and Beaver Street.
  • Main Street Lane Shifts: Temporary lane shifts and closures will be in effect throughout the week on the north and south sides of Main Street, between Water Street and Central Square.
  • Stay Alert: Construction activities and associated traffic impacts may change as work progresses. Motorists and pedestrians are encouraged to use caution, remain alert, and be prepared for changing traffic patterns throughout the project area.

Traffic operations and parking will be restored to normal conditions by the end of each workday.
