Listings are updated promptly, with all City of Keene opportunities to work, be a volunteer, or obtain a student internship posted through Human Resources. Paid position vacancies also are posted internally in accordance with relevant collective bargaining agreements and City policy. If an application deadline is not listed, it means the position will be open until filled.

  • Volunteers

    Thank you for your interest in volunteering with the City of Keene.  Whether you would like to help at work with youth, coordinate a library program, or assist staff with special projects or administrative tasks, the volunteer program offers opportunities for everyone.  By contributing your time, skills, talents and interests, you’re making a difference for the benefit of both the Keene community and yourself.

    We welcome community members aged 14 years and above in any number of activities sponsored by the City.  Volunteers 18 years of age and older will need an acceptable background check before beginning volunteer service to comply with State law and City policy.

    • There are no requests for volunteers at this time.  If you have a specific idea in mind, such as de-littering some of the park trails or serving as an election worker, please contact the appropriate department directly to determine whether staff can oversee your efforts.
  • Help seasonally in Parks & Recreation

    Summer seasonal positions related to parks, cemeteries, and recreation programs are usually recruited beginning in February. Winter seasonal positions for recreation programs are usually recruited beginning in late summer.   For information about these types of positions, please visit our Current Job Opportunities page.

  • Summer Youth Training Program

    The Summer Youth Training Program recruitment is for 14- and 15-year-old Keene residents.  Recruitment usually begins in April, and the program is dependent on funding through the annual operating budget process that concludes in June.   • How our process works

    To help ensure the safety of and services to our community, each selection process is thorough and deliberate so we can select the right volunteer or employee for each opportunity―meaning the most qualified, effective, and safe candidate.

    • Application materials are accepted by Human Resources (HR) until the deadline, at which time the opportunity will be unpublished.  All applications are acknowledged by email.
    • Application materials are sent to appropriate review team members for consideration.
    • Initial candidates are selected for interview by the review team.
    • Applicants not selected for interviews are notified by HR.
    • Interviews are scheduled and conducted.
    • The final candidate is determined, and reference checks are conducted.
    • A recommendation to extend a conditional offer is forwarded to the City Manager.  If approved, a conditional offer is made by the department.
    • If accepted, a background check is conducted and appropriate exams or screenings are conducted.
    • Criminal and driving records requests are processed through state agencies.
    • Interviewed candidates not selected are notified.
    • Depending on the position, a pre-employment drug test, physical examination, and/or psychological examination also may also be required. All records are safeguarded in accordance with applicable privacy laws.
    • The department notifies the applicant to coordinate a start date.
