Next week’s schedule in Central Square will be similar to what we saw this week:
Expected work
- Liberty Utilities will continue working on the west side of Central Square, including connecting the new line to the existing Court Street and West Street infrastructure
- Liberty will also be working from West St to the middle of the intersection heading towards Roxbury Street.
- Casella will be mostly setting up the staging area on Gilbo Avenue as well as construction warning signs around the work area. You may see workers marking the pavement to layout out their trenches.
- Casella may begin exploratory excavation (exposing the existing utilizes to take precise measurements), but most likely that will occur during the following week.
Expected parking impacts
- Parking on the west side of Central Square will continue to be closed during construction hours
- 3 spaces on the west side of Federal Street will be closed (these are being reserved for delivery trucks that would normally stop on the side of West Street to deliver to that block)
- It is possible that the first space on the right side of Court Street will need to be closed when Liberty connects the new line to the existing Court Street line
Expected traffic impacts
- Access to West Street from Central Square will be closed for at least some of the week
- Beginning Monday and continuing to at least Wednesday, possibly later, southbound lanes from Central Square onto Main Street will be reduced to one lane.
- When the right-hand lane is closed, traffic will continue normally, reduced to the one lane (plus the left hand turn lane).
- IMPORTANT: When the southbound left lane is closed, the left turn from Central Square to Roxbury Street will be closed. This is to ensure safety of both workers and vehicles.
The biggest change next week will be the need to close the left turn from Central Square onto Roxbury Street. This is tentatively schedule for Tuesday and Wednesday. A signed detour route will direct drivers to Gilbo Avenue -> School Street -> West Street. From there drivers can proceed straight across the intersection to Roxbury. Folks that are familiar with the downtown road network may find a more convenient route, depending on their destination.
