Arbor Day Proclamation

The City of Keene recognizes Arbor Day as a celebration of the vital role trees play in enhancing our environment and community. Since the first Arbor Day in 1872, when one million trees were planted, more than 500 million trees have been planted nationwide, highlighting their lasting importance. Trees improve air quality by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen, while also providing shade and food. As Arbor Day marks its 154th anniversary, Keene proudly celebrates its 47th year as a Tree City USA by continuing its commitment to urban forestry, including the planting of maple, linden, and birch trees on School Street today, April 24, 2026, with Surry Village Charter School. Mayor Jay V. Kahn proclaims April 24, 2026, as Arbor Day in Keene and encourages all residents to support and participate in efforts to care for and plant trees for the benefit of current and future generations.
