Partners plan a December 7th opening at the UCC with operations through April 5th.
The City of Keene, Hundred Nights, Inc., and community partners are preparing to open a temporary overnight warming shelter on December 7, 2026, with plans to remain open through April 5, 2027, contingent upon available funding. The proposed 120-day operating period builds on last winter’s successful collaboration to provide individuals experiencing homelessness with a safe, warm place to stay overnight during the coldest months of the year.
The United Church of Christ has once again generously offered its space to host the shelter, while St. James Episcopal Church has stepped forward to provide a backup location if needed. Hundred Nights has taken the lead in coordinating planning meetings, hiring staff, and preparing to train volunteers who will support shelter operations.
The City of Keene is contributing $50,000 again this year to help support shelter operations. Last winter, the shelter operated from January through March, providing many nights of emergency shelter to individuals in need.
“Last winter demonstrated what we can accomplish when organizations come together with a shared purpose,” said City Manager Elizabeth A. Ferland. “I am grateful to the United Church of Christ for once again opening its doors, to St. James Episcopal Church for offering a backup location, and to Hundred Nights for taking the lead in preparing for this winter. By starting earlier and working together, we hope to provide greater stability and predictability for those who need shelter during the winter months.”
Additional community financial support will be important to sustain the shelter for the full 120-day period. Individuals, businesses, and organizations interested in supporting the effort are encouraged to contribute. Donations to support this community collaboration can be made by visiting the Hundred Nights website, www.hundrednightsinc.org. Individuals interested in volunteering can email volunteer@hundrednightsinc.org to learn more about Hospitality Volunteer openings.
“We continue to be inspired by our community and how they come together to support those in need,” said Becky Beaton, Executive Director of Hundred Nights. “The cold winter months can be especially difficult for our neighbors experiencing homelessness, but with partners like the City of Keene, The United Church of Christ and St. James Episcopal Church, we know that a much-needed resource will once again be available this year.”
For those in need of this resource, contact Hundred Nights directly at (603) 352-5197 to complete an intake. The Overnight Warming Center will open nightly at 9:00 PM (9:30 PM on Saturdays).
