Construction Projects and Updates Week of 8/17/26

The City of Keene Public Works Department announces the following construction and maintenance activities scheduled for the week of August 17, 2026. Motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists are encouraged to use caution when traveling through active work zones, follow posted signage, and expect minor delays.

Central Square: On Monday, August 17, Liberty Utilities will continue installing a new gas main on the east side of Central Square near Roxbury Street. Roxbury Street will be closed during active construction, with detours established as needed. Work is expected to continue throughout the week, weather permitting. Traffic and parking will be restored to normal conditions at the end of each workday.

Central Square: Beginning Monday, August 17, the City’s contractor, Casella Construction, Inc., will continue performing test pits and installing sewer main on the west side of Central Square. Drivers and pedestrians should expect shifted traffic, road closures, and detours as needed within the work zone. Work will continue throughout the week. Traffic and parking will be restored to normal conditions by the end of each business day.

Marlboro Street: On Monday, August 17, the City’s contractor, Bazin Brothers, will continue construction on the Marlboro Street Reconstruction Project, including curb installation and sidewalk work between Kelleher Street and Eastern Avenue. Traffic will be maintained as alternating one-way or shifted two-way traffic within the active work zone. Normal traffic conditions will be restored at the end of each workday.

Key Road: On Monday, August 17, the City’s contractor, Park Construction, will continue installing a box culvert, catch basins, and tributary culverts in and adjacent to the Brickhouse and Keene Cinema Plaza. Parking areas and travel lanes within the parking lots will be restricted or detoured as needed. Work is expected to continue throughout the week and is anticipated to be completed in approximately two weeks.

George Street Bridge Replacement: On Monday, August 17, the City’s contractor, New England Infrastructure, Inc., will install support-of-excavation systems (sheeting) and utilities on the west side of the bridge. George Street will remain closed, with traffic detoured, for the remainder of construction. This phase of the project is anticipated to take approximately 14 weeks. Additional updates will be provided as the project progresses.

Kennedy Street: Beginning Monday, August 17, at 8:00 a.m., the City’s contractor, Frank Lucius Construction, Inc., will install a water main gate valve on Kennedy Street at Sesame Street. Traffic will be maintained as alternating one-way traffic during construction. Work is expected to take one day, weather permitting. Affected property owners have been notified of the planned work and associated water outage. Normal traffic conditions will be restored at the end of the workday.

Gilsum Street: Beginning Tuesday, August 18, at 8:00 a.m., the City’s contractor, Frank Lucius Construction, Inc., will replace water main gate valves on Gilsum Street at Woodbury Street. Gilsum Street and Woodbury Street will be closed to through traffic during construction. Traffic will be maintained as alternating one-way traffic where possible. Work is expected to take one day, weather permitting. Affected property owners have been notified of the planned work and associated water outage. Normal traffic conditions will be restored at the end of the workday.

Birch Street: Beginning Wednesday, August 19, at 8:00 a.m., the City’s contractor, Frank Lucius Construction, Inc., will replace water main valves on Birch Street at Aspen Street and Balsam Street. Traffic will be maintained as alternating one-way traffic during construction. Work is expected to take one day, weather permitting. Affected property owners have been notified of the planned work and associated water outage. Normal traffic conditions will be restored at the end of the workday.

Walker Street: Beginning Thursday, August 20, at 8:00 a.m., the City’s contractor, Frank Lucius Construction, Inc., will install a water main valve on Walker Street at Kenworth Avenue. Traffic will be maintained as alternating one-way traffic during construction. Work is expected to take one day, weather permitting. Affected property owners have been notified of the planned work and associated water outage. Normal traffic conditions will be restored at the end of the workday.

Eastern Avenue and THT Trailhead: On Monday, August 17, the City’s contractor, Gordon’s Property Services and Maintenance, will continue construction on the Transportation Heritage Trail, including reconstruction of the trailhead and installation of drainage. Trailhead parking will be closed for the week. Work is expected to continue for several weeks, with the overall project anticipated to be completed in October 2026.

City Hall Parking Garage: On Monday, August 17, the City’s contractor, Structural Preservation Systems, will continue installing joint sealants and cleaning and demobilizing equipment and materials. Work on the lower level of the parking garage is complete. Due to intermittent rain this past week and anticipated weather conditions this coming week, installation of the traffic membrane has been postponed until the following week.

The upper level of the City Hall Parking Garage will remain closed through September 1 to allow for installation of the traffic membrane, weather permitting. The garage is anticipated to reopen and resume normal operations on September 1.
