Good afternoon,
Casella Construction, Inc., the City’s contractor, continued installing the new water main on the west side of Central Square this past week. Crews also began water main installation along the north end and removed the granite bollards and chains surrounding the Central Square Common. These historical fixtures will be cleaned and reset as construction progresses.
Planned Work Activities:
- Monday, September 14: Water main installation will continue on the north side of Central Square near the intersection with Washington Street, transitioning to the east side of the Square as the week progresses. Casella will also begin installing new sewer main on West Street near Central Square, working westward throughout the week.
- To safely complete this work, parking spaces will be temporarily closed, and drivers should expect shifted traffic patterns, road closures, and detours within the active work zone.
- Crews may work past 5:00 p.m. to utilize daylight, maximize good weather, maintain productivity, and restore traffic and parking by the end of each workday.
Parking Impacts:
- Monday, September 14 – Wednesday, September 16: Parking on the north side of Central Square will be closed from 7:00 a.m. until the conclusion of the workday. Any parking space blocked by an orange cone or barrier is a designated “No Parking” zone.
- Several public parking lots within a short walking distance will remain open. For locations and details, please visit the City’s Parking Services webpage.
Planned Traffic Impacts/Detours:
- Monday, September 14 – Wednesday, September 16: The north side of Central Square will be closed to vehicle traffic. Northbound traffic will be detoured via Washington Street → Union Street → Court Street. Southbound traffic on Washington Street will be detoured via Union Street → Court Street.
- Wednesday September 16 – Friday, September 18: The left (inside) northbound lanes through Central Square will be closed, reducing northbound travel to a single lane. Eastbound traffic on West Street will be reduced to a single lane from St. James Street to Central Square.
Please note that planned construction activities and related traffic impacts may change as work progresses. Motorists and pedestrians are encouraged to stay alert, use caution, and be prepared for shifting traffic patterns throughout the project area.
