Keene Fire Marshal’s Office Reminds Residents to Check Appliance Recalls, Maintain Ventilation Systems, and Test Smoke & CO Alarms

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The Keene Fire Marshal’s Office Reminds Residents to Check Appliance Recalls, Maintain Ventilation Systems, and Test Smoke & CO Alarms

In response to several recent residential fires, the Keene Fire Department is reminding residents to take simple steps to reduce fire and life-safety risks at home by checking appliances for manufacturer recalls, routinely cleaning bathroom exhaust fans and ventilation systems, and ensuring smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms are properly installed and working.

Many household appliances – including refrigerators, dishwashers, dryers, ranges, microwaves, and small countertop appliances – are periodically recalled due to electrical or mechanical defects that may pose fire hazards. Residents are encouraged to register appliances with manufacturers when purchased, and to regularly check the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) website at www.cpsc.gov for updated recall information. If a recalled appliance is identified, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for repair or replacement immediately.

Bathroom exhaust fans and ventilation ducts can accumulate dust and lint over time, reducing airflow and increasing the risk of overheating. Residents should:

  • Turn off power to the fan before cleaning
  • Remove and wash the fan cover
  • Vacuum dust buildup from the fan housing and surrounding vent openings
  • Ensure exterior vent outlets are free from debris, snow, or nesting materials

The department also reminds residents to verify that smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms are installed on every level of the home, outside sleeping areas, and inside bedrooms where required, and to test them monthly. Replace batteries as needed and replace alarms according to manufacturer recommendations, typically every 10 years.

Small maintenance steps can make a significant difference in home fire prevention. Checking appliance recalls, maintaining ventilation systems, and ensuring working smoke and CO alarms are simple actions that help keep families safe.
