Mayor Kahn presented a proclamation on June 28th, 2025, to congratulate Monadnock Humane Society on their 150th anniversary, in recognition of their invaluable contributions to our community and their unwavering commitment to the well-being of animals. In 1875, the Keene Humane Society was founded by Jennie B. Powers, driven by her compassionate response to animal abuse and neglect observed while serving the Keene, New Hampshire community. This pioneering effort laid the groundwork for a century and a half of dedicated animal welfare services. Evolving into the Monadnock Humane Society (MHS) in 1995, the organization has since become a vital resource offering quality animal care, exceptional programs, and extensive resources to animals and their human companions across 43 communities in the Monadnock Region and beyond, annually caring for approximately 7,000 animals and successfully placing over 1,200 deserving pets with loving families from its shelter in Swanzey. MHS demonstrates an unwavering commitment to accessibility and community well-being through initiatives such as low-cost medical care and a mobile Pet Food Pantry, addressing barriers to pet ownership for low-income populations. Furthermore, the Animal Safety Net Program provides free boarding and medical care for pets of community members facing domestic violence, homelessness, or those undergoing drug or mental health treatment. MHS actively upholds animal protection through its Humane Agent, who responds to reports of animal cruelty, neglect, and hoarding, working collaboratively with law enforcement to ensure just outcomes. The profound impact of MHS is significantly bolstered by the extraordinary dedication of its community members, who contributed over 12,700 hours of volunteer labor in fiscal year 2024 alone.
