Welcome! In 2024, the City is planning to reconstruct the George Street Bridge over Beaver Brook. This bridge was built in 1922 and has served the City well. The George Street Bridge is one of the City’s ten currently “red-listed” bridges. It is inspected annually by the New Hampshire Department of Transportation (NHDOT). As such, it is eligible for funding under the NHDOT State Bridge Aid (SBA) program. Under this program, the State funds 80% of eligible project costs and the City funds 20%.
The bridge has been included in the City’s Capital Improvement Program (CIP) since 2009. As you can see from some of the photos, replacement is needed. The process to secure NHDOT funding through the SBA program is lengthy. We are now partly through the design process. Topographic survey and geotechnical engineering are complete. Cultural resource coordination is underway. A neighborhood meeting was held on February 14th, 2023, to present the project and gather public input. There will be future opportunities to take part in the design, most notably at an upcoming meeting of the Keene Municipal Services, Facilities, and Infrastructure Committee. This project will be included on the agenda for that meeting in the near future.
