The City of Keene Public Works Department has implemented an updated fee policy at the Recycling Center and Transfer Station designed to reduce delays, improve traffic flow, and streamline service for residents and commercial users.
Effective immediately, any customer who chooses to dispose of waste using the facility’s truck scale—rather than paying the standard per-bag fee—will be charged a minimum disposal fee of $30. This minimum fee applies to all scale-weighed loads, regardless of weight. Residents who choose not to use the scale may continue to dispose of household trash at the current rate of $3 per bag. Customers with less than 340 pounds of waste will find the bag option more economical.
Over the past year, there have been significant service delays caused by very small loads utilizing the scale system. Even when the load weighs only a few pounds, scale transactions require additional steps, paperwork, and time, which slows traffic through the facility and increases wait times for all users. The new minimum fee ensures that the scale system is reserved for customers with larger or mixed loads.
Recycling services remain free of charge for accepted items, and staff are available on-site to answer questions and help users choose the most cost-effective option. “Our goal is to keep wait times low, improve efficiency, and make sure customers can get in and out of the facility safely and quickly,” said Don Lussier, Public Works Director. “This update will allow us to better manage traffic and provide more consistent service, especially during peak hours.”
