Before the City Council on May 1, 2025, Mayor Kahn presented a proclamation to Sam Jackson of the Bicycle Pedestrian Path Advisory Committee to proclaim May to be “Bike Month” in the City of Keene, and encouraged all citizens to celebrate our city as a walkable and bikeable community by commuting to work, to school, to the store, to parks, and around their neighborhoods by bicycle or by walking. The City of Keene is a Bicycle Friendly Community that recognizes bicycling as an integral part of a multi-modal transportation system and has appointed a Bicycle & Pedestrian Pathway Advisory Committee. Bicycling can replace driving for short trips, thereby helping the region conserve energy, reduce traffic congestion, and improve air quality. Bicycling to work is good for your health – as part of an overall program recommended in a report on workplace wellness by the National Center on Health, Physical Activity and Disability (NCHPAD). The City of Keene Bicycle & Pedestrian Pathway Advisory Committee (BPPAC), Monadnock Alliance for Sustainable Transportation, Monadnock Food Co-op, Southwest Region Planning Commission, Healthy Monadnock Alliance, Monadnock Cycling Club, Pathways for Keene, the Keene Y, the Kiwanis Club, Keene State College, Local Crowd Monadnock, and other public and private groups and individuals have worked together to promote commuting by bicycle throughout the month of May. As a result of the City’s and these groups’ efforts, Keene once again is recognized nationally as a SILVER Bicycle Friendly Community. The Kiwanis Club is holding their annual Kool Wheels event for Kids on May 3rd, the League of American Bicyclists is bringing a Smart Cycling Class to the Keene Public Library on May 10th, and the second monthly Community Bike Ride will take place on May 17th.
