Mayor Kahn presented a proclamation at Central Square to proclaim June 14th, 2025, Flag Day in Keene and urged all citizens to display the American flag with pride and to take a moment to consider the profound meaning it holds for our nation. Flag Day commemorates the anniversary of the Continental Congress’ adoption in 1777 of the Flag Resolution that established the design for the stars and stripes national flag. President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation on May 30, 1916, establishing June 14th as the official date for Flag Day. It wasn’t until August 3rd, 1949 that President Harry Truman signed an Act of Congress officially designating June 14th each year as National Flag Day. The colors of the flag have important meanings; red represents valor and hardiness, white represents purity and innocence, and blue represents vigilance, perseverance, and justice. Our flag, with its thirteen stripes and fifty stars, is a powerful symbol of our nation’s history, its enduring principles, and the aspirations we hold for the future. Flag Day serves as an opportunity for all Americans, regardless of political affiliation, to come together in appreciation of the ideals our flag represents, reminding us of the sacrifices made by those who defended our nation. Flag Day occurring exactly three weeks before Independence Day signifies a period of reflection on our nation’s founding principles.
