8/28/26 Downtown Project Update: Central Square Work & Traffic Updates

Good afternoon,

Underground utility installation continued in Central Square this past week. Liberty Utilities continued installation of the new gas main on the east side of Central Square. Casella Construction, Inc. began installation of the new water main on the west side of Central Square and continued preparations for water main installation on the east side, including the removal of light poles and granite curbing.

Planned Work Activities:

  • Monday, August 31: Liberty Utilities will continue installation of the new gas main on the east side of Central Square near City Hall, Washington Street, and Roxbury Street. This work is anticipated to be complete by the end of the day Wednesday, September 2, weather permitting.
  • Monday, August 31: Casella Construction will continue installation of the new water main on the west side of Central Square and at the intersection of Central Square and West Street, then work west along West Street as the week progresses. Casella will also continue preparations for water main installation on the east side of Central Square, including sidewalk saw cutting and fence installation. Additionally, tree protection fencing and trunk protection will continue to be installed for trees adjacent to active construction. This work is anticipated to continue throughout the week. All construction activities are planned to be wrapped up by 12:00 noon on Friday, September 4, ahead of the holiday weekend.

To safely perform this work, traffic shifts, road closures, detours, and parking closures will be in place as outlined below.

Parking Impacts:

  • Monday, August 31 – Friday, September 4: Parking on the east and west sides of Central Square will be closed from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Note: Several public parking lots within a short walk of Central Square will remain open throughout construction. Please visit the City’s Parking Services webpage for additional information.

Planned Traffic Impacts/Detours:

  • Monday, August 31: Westbound traffic on West Street at Central Square will be detoured via Gilbo Avenue and School Street.
  • Monday, August 31 – Friday, September 4: Traffic will be shifted on the east and west sides of Central Square.
  • Monday, August 31 – Wednesday, September 2: Westbound traffic on Roxbury Street will be detoured via Franklin Street and Beaver Street.
  • Monday, August 31 – Wednesday, September 2: Northbound traffic on Washington Street will be detoured via Court Street and Mechanic Street.
  • Tuesday, September 1 – Friday, September 4: West Street will be closed to through traffic between Central Square and School Street. Traffic will be detoured via Gilbo Avenue and School Street. Eastbound access for local traffic and deliveries will be maintained.

Please understand that planned work activities and associated traffic impacts are subject to change as work progresses. Throughout construction, motorists and pedestrians are encouraged to remain alert, use caution, and anticipate changing traffic patterns.
