On-Street Parking Will Only Be Prohibited During Storms
The City of Keene is introducing new winter weather on-street parking rules, effective immediately. Vehicles can now be parked on the street overnight in public parking areas throughout the winter unless a Winter Weather Parking Ban is declared. This replaces the previous ban that was in effect every day from November to April. These changes, based on an ordinance recently adopted by the City Council, are designed to improve parking availability year-round for the convenience of the public and in support of the City's housing goals.
When inclement weather is in the forecast, the Public Works Director will declare a Winter Weather Parking Ban with at least 6 hours advance notice. Notifications will be sent via email, text message, Facebook, Instagram, and the www.KeeneNH.gov/snow web page. These notifications will specify the start time of the ban and include links to information such as alternative off-street parking locations.
As this new approach to winter parking and snow removal operations is implemented with early winter storms, the City will prioritize informational campaigns to inform the public. Those who are accustomed to parking in public, on-street locations are encouraged to sign up for Winter Weather Parking Ban notifications using the sign-up link at www.KeeneNH.gov/snow. Notifications will be sent via email and text (SMS) message to those who sign up in advance. Facebook and Instagram posts will also be published, and the parking ban status will be updated on the web page.
The primary goal is to ensure clear roads for the safety and convenience of all residents. To achieve this, cars must be removed from streets during winter parking bans. While enforcement may involve ticketing vehicles left in on-street parking locations, the initial focus will be on communication and education to help residents learn about notification procedures and alternative parking options during storm events.
