Airplane Accident Information
An aircraft accident occurred Friday evening, October 21, 2022, and will be investigated by the NTSB
Keene, NH, October 22, 2022:
The Keene Fire Department was dispatched to 661 Main Street (south of the Route 101 intersection) at 6:48 P.M. on Friday, October 21, 2022, for an airplane-involved incident. An aircraft crashed into a multifamily residential building in the specific location of the building’s attached garage and started a fire. The fire was upgraded to “3rd alarm” status, and area departments responded to the scene. The fire was declared out at 8:47 P.M.
Eight adults reside in the four apartments in the building, and each of the units was occupied at the time of the accident. No occupants were injured, but all were displaced from their homes due to the extent of the damage. The two-story building sustained significant damage to an estimated 20% of the rear of the structure, and it will remain uninhabited until it can be further assessed.
Unfortunately, the two passengers on the plane perished in the crash. The Keene Police Department notified their families Friday evening in person. The City expresses sympathy for the people who lost their lives in this tragic accident and for their families and loved ones.
The single-engine aircraft owned by Monadnock Aviation departed from Keene Dillant-Hopkins Airport on runway 02 (northbound) shortly before the accident. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), New Hampshire Department of Transportation (DOT), and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are on site, and the NTSB will be the lead agency conducting an investigation. It is very early in the process at this point. Further information regarding the accident will be made public when it is released by the NTSB.
The quick response efforts of all emergency responders who acted to extinguish the fire and assist those impacted are sincerely appreciated.
