The City of Keene 2010 Comprehensive Master Plan defines a "sustainable community" as one that takes a long-range view, balancing and integrating economic, environmental, social, and physical considerations within its local decision-making. Achieving a sustainable community requires dedication throughout the city – municipal departments, citizens, businesses and organizations – to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. It means coordinating efforts to use resources efficiently, reduce waste, and prevent pollution and environmental impacts. It means taking into account our shared objectives to achieve our community’s vision for a healthy community, continued high quality of life, and a vibrant economy.
The City's sustainability efforts aim to strengthen community through social collaborations, environmentally friendly decisions and projects, as well as sound economic planning and action.
